A talent search competition has matched two hearts - that of Melur, a Malay-mixed girl and an Indian male student, Mahesh. Melur, with her melodious voice, singing whilst playing the piano is one of the seven finalists of the Talentime competition of her school organised by Cikgu Adibah. Likewise Hafiz, enthralling with his vocalist talent while playing the guitar, dividing his time between school and mother, who is hospitalised for brain tumor.
It all started after Mahesh, amongst the students assigned to get the finalists to school for practice, delivered the notice of successful audition to Melur's house. His handsome looks attracted the girl. Early on of their relationship, tragedy struck Mahesh's family when his uncle Ganesh who had been the care-taker of the family since the loss of Mahesh's father, was stabbed to death on his wedding day. Melur thinking that Mahesh's silence was due to his grief over the tragedy became furious when she was continuously ignored. She regretted it however after Hafez revealed Mahesh's situation.
That changed Melur's perception of Mahesh. Likewise Mahesh, who grew comfortable with the presence of the girl who often quotes beautiful poetry. Mahesh, realizing that the relationship will be opposed, kept it hidden from his mother,still grieving over the death of Ganesh. Alas, the secret was exposed and Mahesh was assaulted before Melur's very eyes. Just a day before the competition, is Melur resilient enough to sing the poetic lyrics of her song when her heart is tormented by the thoughts of Mahesh? What about Mahesh who has found his first love? On Talentime night, everything unfolds
19-year old Ah Loong (who also called himself "Jason") is in charge of a stall selling pirated VCDs. Contrary to the stereotype of his social standing, Ah Loong is an incurable romantic with an unlikely hobby: He loves to read and write poetry. Quite content to carry on being the Romeo of the slums, Ah Loong's life takes a sudden turn one day when a Malay schoolgirl, Orked, arrives at his stall. She is in search of films starring her favorite actor Takeshi Kaneshiro. Love blossoms between Orked and Ah Loong, although there are social and racial pressures that stand in their way.
In the end, Ah Loong is involved in a motor vehicle accident while Orked is going to England to pursue her studies. It is not clear if he lived or died until the sequel, Gubra which shows that Jason really did die. After the credits finish rolling however, Orked is shown wearing a wedding ring sleeping beside Jason, who also has a wedding ring. In Mukhsin, Jason and the adult Orked are shown to be living together. However, the adult Orked is not called by her name in this scene as the young Orked is.

Kisah kehidupan Orked yang sudah berkahwin. Bapa Orked pula dimasukkan ke hospital kerana sakit. Di situ, dia berjumpa pula dengan bapa Jason. Pada waktu yang sama, terdapat kisah seorang bilal yang hidup berjiran dengan pelacur. Pelacur terbabit pula menghantar anaknya mengaji Quran di rumah bilal berkenaan...
Seven years after Jason, Orked is now married to a much older guy, Arif. Everything seems ideal in their marriage at first glance; Arif loves Orked to bits and theirs seem like a match made in heaven. One fateful morning, Orked is awakened by a distressing phone call from Mak Inom with news that Pak Atan has become catatonic due to diabetic complications. Orked rushes to her parents house, to find Pak Atan unresponsive and ill; Mak Inom and Annuar the family driver are hysterical. Kak Yam, the family maid however is rather calm and collected. After some chaos, they take Pak Atan to the hospital. There, Orked bumps into Alan, Jasons elder brother. His father, Pa has also been hospitalized. As the film develops, we witness the friendship between Alan and Orked flourish, to Arifs apprehension. Perhaps because for Orked, Alan is a link to her first love. Throughout the film we are also introduced to another 'family'. The muezzin or Pak Bilal heads an institution of sorts; consisting of his wife, Kak Maz, their 7 year-old child, two prostitutes, Temah and Kiah, as well as Temahs son, Shahrin and a mysterious gambler named Ki. Pak Bilal is portrayed as a non-judgmental and religious man whose way of 'preaching' is most unconventional. A family man, Pak Bilal chooses to surround himself in a community that seems lost, and lacking in hope, love and trust. Their vivacity in this film is in direct opposite from Orkeds thus the audience is invited to observe the diversity between the two sets. The story then unfolds into a web of deceit and heartbreak. Orked finds out that her husband has been cheating on her; Temah is diagnosed with a serious illness, Ki meets his illegitimate son under dismaying circumstances. Kak Yam falls for a hospital attendant named Pengki, to Annuars dismay, whilst taking care of Pak Atan in the ward, and Kiah, the young prostitute is killed accidentally.

Everyone has a first love to talk about. This is the love story of Mukhsin and Orked when he is 12 and she is 10. The first time Orked set eyes on Mukhsin is when he sees Orked playing in the rain. From that moment on, his heart is on fire and his hand is 'dancing' to the song that Kak Yam is singing as he goes to his aunt's house. Orked does not behave like the other girls in her village. She is sent to a Chinese medium school, she speaks English and prefers to read rather than to play with her peers. While other children tolerate her participation in their games and revelry, the tomboyish Orked is very much treated like an outsider. Things change when Mukhsin, a boy from another village, gets to know of Orked. Mukhsin's existence has made Orked's life more memorable. Their friendship blossoms overnight, even to the extent that they begin to dress alike, running around barefooted, cycling, flying kites and climbing trees. Mukhsin has tried to tell Orked that he likes her. But he never manages to tell her.
Friendship is not a game to play, It is not a word to say, It doesn't start on December and ends on August, It is tomorrow, yesterday, today and everyday.
